Strategy Guide

What To Do

  • -Play aggressively from the start and always force him to Q you to engage.
  • -Wait for his Q before using your E, and Q him when he uses W to heal. Something to note is that if you walk too close to him when throwing Q, he can use his own Q to dodge your Q, so try to only use your Q (which has 1050 range) when yi is outside of his alpha strike range (which is 600 compared to our 525 auto attack range). If you cannot create that distance, save your Q for until after he comes out of his alpha strike.
  • -This applies especially for when Master Yi uses his R. If you Q him and then E, he will be confused and unable to pinpoint your location for a while - giving you enough time to either burst him or retreat to your tower.
  • -Last tip is to just use recall liberally when low on HP. Yi can dive very easily and tank a tower shot with his W, so do not give him too many free kills to snowball, and you will be able to deal with him 1v1 and with your team.
  • -If you are less confident in the matchup, armor boots and/or exhaust will go a long way.

Level-by-Level

Matchup Tip

Matchup tip: Play extremely aggressive but do not be reckless - this matchup is quinn favored pre-6. Take control of the 1st top bush and wait for him to walk in or nearby. You do not want to face-check any of the bushes, as Yi will chunk you hard. To win trades, your goal will always be to get him to engage on you with his Q. He gets to choose which direction he exits from, so once he reappears, position yourself correctly to vault back towards your tower. The hail of blades damage is going to feel scary, but as long as you E in a reasonable time and trade back with autos, your electrocute/PTA will end up doing more.

L1

Continue this trade pattern above, while weaving autos onto the minions to push the wave and obtain prio. Master Yi's goal in top lane is to poke you with Q every time his hail of blades is up (10 sec cd) to eventually dive you with flash + ignite. Your job then is to out-trade him in these early levels and kill him before he kills you, which is why we bring DPS runes and ignite.

L2

He will usually use W offensively, but if he uses his W to regen while he still has Q, do NOT vault to cancel his W. He will instantly counter-engage with Q and get a very nasty Hail of Blades trade on you that can lead to your death. Instead, use that opportunity to land a long range Q on him and get free damage. He cannot Q to you when nearsighted, so anytime you can land a Q on him, feel free to harass with as many autos as you can.

L3

Master Yi can be very scary once he has ult. He will try to use the same tactics as before to trade and poke you down, healing with W on ocassion - if you are low enough, he can potentially ult, Q and flash + ignite you for insane damage. But if you have been playing aggressively, pushing the lane and poking him under his tower, he will not have enough health to ult and kill you without dying himself. He realistically cannot one-shot you until he gets 2-3 full items, so post-6, make sure you are still pushing him in and playing aggressive so he is always too low to all-in you.
